Our Letters to My Younger Self series features letters from people around the world dedicated to their younger selves. Read on for throwbacks, humour, and heartfelt advice.
This letter is written by Canadian actor and writer Kara Chamberlain to her teenage self.
Dear 13-year-old Kara,
Here’s some advice I would have loved to have been given at your age…
First, no one else is judging you as much as you are judging yourself. Actually, I’m pretty sure no one else is judging you at all because they are too busy with their own stuff.
This one may come as a shock, but there is literally no pressure to be “popular” - at least not in the way popularity is portrayed in movies. Seek out friendships with people who make you laugh, who make you feel connected. Those are the people you want in your corner.
Also, you don’t need to worry so much about what your body looks like. It will be an ever-changing beast. Some days you will love it for what it does for you while other days you will hate it for not fitting into your favourite jeans anymore. Despite all the changes, one thing will remain true: your inner self makes your outer self beautiful. Cultivate your inner world, and your outer world will become enough.
Oh, and one last thing. Trust your gut. Your head is super confused right now - new school, changing technology, new friends, more pressure to do well in your classes. Your heart is obsessed with random crushes on people you hardly even speak to. But your gut is starting to talk to you, and if you listen to it you will end up following your dreams.
So much love,
You at 30
Kara stars as the sassy teenage Cecilia in Friday Night Love Poem, which will stream on ZOOTV from August 16-29, 2021, available to view worldwide.
