Our Creativity Spotlight series features advice on artistic practice, inspiration, and a glimpse into the worlds of artists working in a variety of disciplines.
Clara is a German actress and creative based in London. She recently branched out into screenwriting and producing, and is using her downtime to explore her creativity.
Tell us a bit about yourself.
My name is Clara Maria Rose. I grew up in Germany and moved to the UK three years ago in order to pursue my creative career.
I'm an actress first, however, due to the nature of the industry I have gained experience in film production and screenwriting. I mostly act in films but I have on-stage experience from Camden Fringe last year which was a great opportunity.
I feel most drawn to either quirky or evil characters in a drama, I like to find the real person behind the facade. I’m interested in finding out why people behave the way they do even if I don’t share their view. I love getting inside the character’s head and make them more human and likeable because, in the end, we all share the same fears and hopes.
How do you stay inspired?
That is a good question. I get inspired mostly in times when I don't have any work. That’s when new ideas are born, I need a bit of desperation to motivate me.
I try to meditate and use positive thinking, a happy mindset can make or break your creativity. Believing that I deserve to be happy and successful in fulfilling my dreams. Also, I like to dance in my room or sing which gives me a feeling of freedom. It is important for me to find a good balance between believing in your dream and staying realistic while accepting that great things are ever-changing.
Doing something for my passion each day even when I don’t want to or don’t feel inspired, by doing a bit each day I often re-inspire myself, it’s getting past the first five minutes of inner resistance.
Also, creating a to-do list, there is nothing better than the feeling of crossing off a task.
What advice would you give to other creatives?
My advice would be to push yourself out of your comfort zone and try new things regularly, find new ways that will lead you to your goal. This has led me to my biggest achievements that I am proud of. Finding like-minded people to collaborate with, you never know if someone you met a year ago will remember how great you were to work with and cast you in their next short film.
The best advice I have received would be, be yourself.
Something that is very important for me to say is it’s ok not to feel your best, to take time out from your creative career even for months and do something else. So that you can come back with fresh enthusiasm and reduce pressure on yourself, this is something I still need to learn but when I’m less pressured I’m much happier and get more things done. Be kind to yourself and others.
PLUG TIME! What are you working on at the moment?
I’m currently working on two projects, one is a short film called Bright Lights, a story about the 11-year creative career of a young woman who realises that the people she trusts have their own interests and that she must conform to soul-destroying industry rules in order to be successful as a female artist while facing her own limitations and overcoming personal struggles. It is still on-hold in pre-production due to the current situation. I feel passionate about this project and it will be bigger than anything I’ve done before, but I need to wait until things become a bit more reliable.
The second project I’m working on is a music album, something I always wanted to try and right now it’s one of the creative things I can do from home.
